SafetyNet 1.0SafetyNet (SN) is a Web application developed by the VTmig group that acts as a "safety net" to help you secure your computer systems. SN allows any Virginia Tech faculty or staff member to scan one computer at a time and allows network liaisons to scan multiple computer systems. In order to use SN in Single mode for one computer or Zone mode for multiple computers, you must log on using your Hokies account, to which all current faculty and staff are entitled. Your Hokies account is not the same as your VT Mail PID and password account. To activate your Hokies account, refer to the Hokies ID page for more information. Network liaisons have the option to use SN in Zone mode to scan an entire DNS (Domain Name Server) zone or select certain computers within a DNS zone. To identify your department's network liaison, see the Network Liaisons page. Network liaisons can grant permissions to others to scan their zone by using the Access Control tab available to network liaisons after logging on to SN. Even if your computer(s) pass all of the SN scans, this does not mean that it is not vulnerable to other kinds of security problems, such as trojans and viruses. SN is simply a tool to use regularly as part of a larger strategy of computer security. You choose the system that you would like SN to scan, as well as control the type of security test. SN maintains a history of your last five scan reports so that you can compare the results and identify newly vulnerable or newly patched systems. In the scan results, SN gives you steps to take when a possible vulnerability has been identified. Think of SN as an independent “white hat” security-consulting firm testing the security of your systems at your command!
