Network Backup Service

Information Systems and Computing offers a Network Backup Service to faculty and staff that provides

• Scheduled daily backup of workstation files and directories
• Offsite storage in compliance with computing standards
• Restoration of files at your convenience

for the following operating systems:

• Unix (Sun, IBM, DEC, SGI, LINUX)
• Mac OS X
• Windows 2000/XP/Vista

Departmental Fees

There is a monthly charge for the network backup service for backup data stored by the backup service. The price is $.20 per GB per month.

Legato Networker (NSR)

Legato Networker provides full monthly, weekly differential, and daily incremental backups. It uses disk-to-collocated tape storage for faster recovery.

Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM)

Tivoli Storage Manager provides progressive incremental backups. TSM backups include:

• Initial full backup with daily incremental backups
• 3 copies of each file
• 30-day retention of inactive copies
• Primary storage on large SATA drives
• Disk-to-disk-to-tape system for quick recovery

Important: Anyone using network back up services should restore their backup/archive data periodically to verify its contents. The backup service administrators can only ensure the validity of the tapes, not the data.
