VT People Search

The purpose of VT People Search is to provide to the public a convenient online source of contact information for Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students. Most of the information in VT People Search comes from the university's enterprise administrative system (Banner). Only public data will display. The type of information displayed by default varies according to your affiliation with Virginia Tech. For more information about affiliations, see VT People Search Affiliations (http://computing.vt.edu/internet_and_web/search_engines/people_search/affiliations.html).

Students

Name, major, PID, and Virginia Tech e-mail address, along with local residential contact information display for all enrolled students who have not requested that their information be held confidentially.

No information will display for enrolled students who request confidentiality. For more information, see Suppressing or Unsuppressing Your Personal Information.

Students not enrolled this term will also not have any information displayed.

Employees

Salaried employees of Virginia Tech (faculty and staff) will have their work contact information displayed, so that anyone doing business with Virginia Tech can find the appropriate person. This information includes name, work address, work phone number, Virginia Tech e-mail address, job title, and department.

Salaried employees who have not requested that their personal information be confidential, will also see their local residential address and telephone number displayed.

After November 6, 2005, all new employee PIDs will be suppressed. If you were employed by Virginia Tech prior to this date, you have the option to suppress your PID. In addition to suppressing your PID, if you want to avoid exposure of your PID, you should create an e-mail alias and set it as your preferred e-mail address to be displayed in VT People Search. For instructions on how to suppress your personal information (including your PID), create an e-mail alias, and set it as your preferred e-mail address, see Suppressing or Unsuppressing Your Personal Information.

Regular wage employees and emergency hire employees will have only their work information displayed.

Employees Taking Classes and Students Who Are Also Employees

Salaried personnel (faculty and staff), regular wage, and emergency hire employees will have their name, job title, department, and work contact information (address, phone number, e-mail address) displayed regardless of whether they may be enrolled in one or more classes. Salaried personnel will also have their local residential contact information displayed by default, but may choose to suppress it.

Student employees should have the affiliation “student wage.” This category includes regular student wage positions, work-study positions, and all types of graduate assistantships. Enrolled students in these positions will have the student display of information—name, major, and e-mail address. If such individuals have asked to have their records to be confidential, then nothing will display.

Emeritus Faculty Members

Emeritus faculty members may elect to have their information displayed in VT People Search by specifying their confidentiality setting in MyVT. Individuals electing to display their information should verify that it is current and correct.

Note: Titles may be changed by the individual's most recent home department.

For instructions on specifying what information appears in VT People Search, see Displaying or Concealing Your Personal Information.

Alumni, Retirees, Former Employees, and Others

Alumni, retirees, previous employees, and students not currently enrolled will not appear in VT People Search.
