Network-Attached Storage (NAS)

Network Infrastructure and Services provides network-attached storage (NAS) spaces to Virginia Tech faculty and staff for individual and organizational use. NAS spaces provide a secure and reliable location to store files so that they are accessible from almost any computer. For example, copies of office documents and e-mail are good candidates for storage in a NAS space.

Note: Data stored on NAS spaces must comply with policies and standards for storing university information. Personally identifying information covered by the Standard for Storing and Transmitting Personally Identifying Information must be encrypted. See also the Policy for Protecting University Information in Digital Form.

The NAS server, storage.vt.edu, is accessible via TCP/IP using the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol for Windows environments, the Network File System (NFS) protocol for Unix environments, and both of these protocols for Mac OS X environments.
